DUMS Rugby

As with all courses medicine is hard work but in order to get the most of your time here in Dundee it is important to balance your studies with extra-curricular activities such as sport and socialising. DUMS Rugby is an unique opportunity for you to train and play competitive rugby in a friendly environment where you will have the opportunity to meet lots of new mates at the university. As students ourselves we are aware of the importance of work-life balance and pride ourselves on having a flexible schedule that will allow you to be fully involved with the club whilst having plenty of time for your studies.

In terms of the rugby, our team competes in a local SRU regional league and Cup competition. We train on a Wednesday afternoon and play matches every Saturday. We have enjoyed great success on the pitch in recent years, in the 2018/19 season alone we won both the Medical Schools Cup and the Regional Bowl Final, and we were runners up in the National Club Bowl Final at Murrayfield. Whilst being a competitive team, we pride ourselves on creating a friendly environment welcoming players of all abilities, whether you have played representative rugby or are completely new to the game – this is the club for you.

Off the pitch we organise numerous social events and activities, including our annual trip to Murrayfield for international matches, Christmas and End of Season dinners, ‘Old boys’ where we play against the graduated doctors and many more events throughout the season… and if that’s not enough we have a fantastic sponsor bar that will regularly provide you with a cold pint (with a generous discount no less!!!)

If you haven’t been convinced yet we also organise tours around the world…

Over the past 7 years we have travelled to South Africa, Amsterdam, Paris, Prague, Budapest, Romania and Canada. All of our members would agree that our annual tour is the most anticipated and enjoyable event in our calendar. The destination for 2021 has yet to be confirmed but we guarantee it will the best thing you will do this year.

Being a member of DUMS Rugby also comes with other perks.. the older medics / doctors in our club hold regular and exclusive teaching events throughout the year to make sure you are ready for your exams when the time comes. These revision nights are very successful and have been recognised by the University through the presentation of a highly coveted FAME Award.

We are aware that COVID-19 presents many uncertainties but we can assure you that DUMS Rugby are prepared. We have a designated COVID-19 officer who has been working with the SRU to ensure that we get back to competitive rugby in the quickest and safest way possible in compliance with advice from the Scottish Government. In addition we will continue with our social calendar as best we can while complying with the safety advice from the Scottish Government.

We would like to take the opportunity to stress that although we are affiliated with the Medical Society we also welcome a strong group of non-medic students to the club each year who buy into our ethos and get involved both on and off the pitch, as such we encourage you to invite your friends/flatmates along to training with you. Some of the greatest friendships in life are forged on the rugby pitch and we guarantee that joining DUMS Rugby will be one of the best decisions you make in your university life. We hope you are interested in joining the Club and we look forward to meeting you all soon. Feel free to check-out our Facebook page for more info about the team.
